Jerusalem Artichoke
Jerusalem artichoke is the
ideal food for slimming and eliminating excess water and toxins. It has the capacity
to work on the metabolism by producing energy and a feeling of being satiated, without
increasing glycerin levels. The active principle responsible for these phenomena is
Inulin, a carbohydrate well tolerated by the pancreas. Inulin works in synergy with
other elements of the plant, such as the bitter properties, the proteins, soluble fibers
and basic minerals, to exert a regulating effect on the bodys metabolism. Helix Slim
Weight LossHelix Slim is part of the new generation of
A.Vogel products. It is an
adjuvant and efficient means to help control appetite and hunger for
weight-loss and weight-control programs. Taken as directed, Helix Slim
initially helps you reach your ideal weight range, and then it helps you
stay there. Its therapeutic, acting mechanism on appetite and energy
levels is self-timing,
recognized most
after 4 weeks of use … when dieting for weight-loss is often the hardest to
maintain. Helix Slim contains only fresh, organically-grown Jerusalem
artichoke tuber extract (Helianthus tuberosus). It is
available in a 50 ml size and new 60 Tablet form.

equivalent to 660 mg of fresh tubercle.

Historical overview
Despite its name, Jerusalem Artichoke is neither artichoke nor from Jerusalem. Native to North America, it is a member of the sunflower family from which it gets its particularity of following the sun. The name « Jerusalem » probably comes from a distortion of its Italian name « Girasola » that literally means « rotate towards the sun ».
Actions and pharmacology
Jerusalem Artichoke tubercle is a source of inulin, a unique complex sugar. Contrary to potato's starch, which is composed of a very long chain of glucose and has a very high glycemic index, inulin is composed of a shorter chain (30 molecules) of fructose and has a low glycemic index.
Therefore, Jerusalem Artichoke helps to control sugar levels, reducing sugar cravings and hypoglycemia. It also helps to reduce hyperinsulinemia and may be useful as a supportive therapy for non insulin-dependant Type II diabetes (or Syndrome X), which is characterized by elevated insulin levels.
Jerusalem Artichoke reduces the feeling of hunger and is therefore useful in low-calorie diets to control « the munchies ». Finally, it acts as a prebiotic for the good bacteria of the intestine, improving nutrient absorption and overall health.
Scientific studies
A double-blind study was conducted on
Helianthus tuberosus over a period of 12 weeks. In 166 patients following the same diet, 85 were given a placebo and 81
Helianthus tuberosus. The average weight loss, after 12 weeks, was 7.1 kg for the treated group and 4.7 kg for the placebo group (P<0.005), proving that Helianthus tuberosus has a significant effect on weight loss. Moreover, no side effects nor biological parameters modifications (blood tests) were reported. (3)
Researchers have tried to determine the action mechanism of Jerusalem Artichoke in humans. They discovered that neither inulin or fructan increased glycemia or insulinemia as much as might have been expected from its fructose content. Moreover, they noticed a positive effect on intestinal flora. These facts confirm Jerusalem Artichoke's inulin to have different metabolic effects from other complex sugar.(4)
Precautions, contraindications and interactions
Contraindication: known allergy to Jerusalem Artichoke.
IMPORTANT: Never stop a prescription medication without the advice of a physician. Helix Slim was not designed to treat diabetes.
There is no data available on its use during pregnancy or nursing. Since Jerusalem Artichoke is a food, its ingestion, at suggested dosages, should be safe. However, caution is recommended.
